Do you struggle to start tasks on your list?

Is it always just there, getting moved down or ignored?

There’s some resistance to getting a particular thing started or done, but if you want to take some practical steps to GET IT DONE once and for all, here are three suggestions you can try

1️⃣ Break down the task into smaller steps

This is important to do first so you know exactly what you’re dealing with. Then, put the small steps into chronological order. This will help you tackle each step, one at a time. It might be a mini project with a few variables which has hindered your progress because it’s more than the simple tick-off-the-list task you originally thought.

2️⃣ Add the task to your calendar

If the task takes 15 minutes or more to complete, add it to your calendar. This makes it as important and in the same space as meetings, appointments and events. So you’re more likely to get it started and finished. A scheduled appointment to get something done works a treat, especially if you turn off all your notifications and alerts.

3️⃣ Use the Pomodoro Technique.

It’s essential that you remove ALL distractions first, and then set yourself a timer for 25 minutes to focus on ONE task and ONLY that task. Then reward yourself with 5 minutes break away from the task, your computer, etc. Rinse and repeat this process four times and then give yourself a longer break.

Read the Pomodoro Technique post for more details on how to apply it.
